Previously
A deadly virus affecting both organics and robotics swept the northern sectors of the Galaxy, sparking a war between the afflicted and the remaining factions. After nearly a year of defensive battles and co-ordinated operations, the war finally ended at the Battle of Ruin. The end of the war saw increased relations between the GSU, Imperium and Santori as they all agreed on a two year ceasefire to mend the damages caused by the crisis.

After these two years the factions signed the Santori Accords, an agreement proclaiming their united efforts to uphold Celestial law, including the protection of innocent life in case of another galactic threat. Following this meeting the Highrock Clans decided to join the Santori Protectorate, expanding their territory by almost double.

Galactic Date
Whilst each planet has their own personal Dates and Times, most of them adhere to the Galactic Standard Calendar when communicating with eachother.

Current Events
The Reich, a returning faction of magic-haters, resurface and initiate a purge of the planet Ordriey, destroying it entirely in the process. This event has made all of the Major Factions uneasy, even though each of them has bigger concerns of their own. Not only are there issues for these powers to deal with, but more factions are rising from the ashes of the Helix War, populating the galaxy once again.

Meanwhile, the Celestial Architect Sam'anar has discovered a way to reverse large parts of the Convergence, sending back many of the planets it had brought into the galaxy. Whilst this move has saved many from unwanted threats, it has also shifted the layout of the galaxy drastically. Because of this, new star-charts have been drawn out with Hyperlanes, allowing them to show the quickest and safest routes between planets.

“Great.” James said, looking down into the crate containing a large chunk of rock, “Now what the hell is it?” he asked. Alex opened his mouth, “Uh… they didn’t have a name for it, just said they never saw nothin’ like it.” he said, “But that’s not what matters.” Sarah put in quickly as James rolled his eyes, “They said it’s strong. Real strong.” she said, “How wonderful. Why do I care?” he said, as the gears inside his head began turning.

“Cause we can sell it, that’s why!” Yvonne said, gesturing emphatically. James snapped his fingers, “That stuck up freak… the guy in the Union Sector… name, name, anyone remember the damned name?” he asked. “Uh, you mean Michael Draven?” Alex asked, scowling, “Yeah, that’s the one!” James said, looking up. “He’s your brother-in-law.” Alex said, exasperated, “Yeah, don’t remind me.” James waved off another response, “His relation to me isn’t the point. Well, it is, but it’s not what matters.” he said.

“He got involved in some hair-brained plan to start a company back on Chiron. Now, since I’m his favorite brother he might just do me a favor.” James said, straightening his coat, “Favorite brother? I thought he tried to kill Michael.” Sarah muttered to Yvonne, “He did. But he’s also Michael’s only brother.” James glowered at them and they stopped whispering, “As I was sayin’ I figure he’ll do me a favor.” James said.

“Now, for whatever reason I can’t begin to fathom, their littly organization hasn’t collapsed yet. They’ve actually done quite well for themselves so far.” James said, “How d’you know that?” Alex asked, “I have my sources.” James replied smugly, “He calls his sister on a regular basis.” Sarah said mockingly, “Shut up.”

“I say we take the rock here and see what they’ll give us for it.” James said, “Oh, brilliant idea. One problem.” Alex said, “What’s that?” James asked obliviously. “We don’t have a ship.” Alex said, annoyed. “Sure we do, Ol’ Pinhead up there.” he said, pointing upwards. “Ah, and does he know he’s become our personal taxi?” Yvonne asked, “Well… not yet.” James said, “But he most certainly does owe me a favor. We collect. He takes us and the rock to Chiron, and we call up Michael, arrange a nice little meeting.”

“Sure, yeah, whatever. Just try not to get us shot at again.” Alex said, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Good man.” James said, clapping Alex on the back as he turned on his heel and made for the ramp up.

“Heya, Pinwheel,” James said as he walked onto the beat down hauler, “What do you want, Polson?” the man asked. He was middle-aged, bearded, and had put on more than a little weight in recent years, but his eyes were as sharp as they ever were. “Well, ya see, you still owe me a favor…” James said, “And me and my friends need to make our way to Chiron with a load of cargo.” the man’s eyes widened, “Polson…” he said, exasperated, “Legal cargo, legal cargo.” James assured, the man leaned back in his seat, “And what if I don’t want to haul your ass around like deadweight?” he said, “You repay debts, Pinhead.” James said, his voice darkening. The man scoffed, “Oh, fine, get your damned cargo up here and we’ll drop you off.”

James smiled, “Glad we could come to terms.” he said, leaning forward and gesturing out to his people, “Oh, and Polson?” the man called as James walked back down the boarding ramp, “What?” he asked dubiously, “Cargo and your friends? Now you owe me.” James smiled, “I do, and I’m sure you’ll collect on that.” James said, shaking his head and heading back into the deserted mine.

“Why’d they abandon this place, anyways?” James asked Alex as they began wheeling crates full of the mystery rock up towards the ship, “Didn’t have a choice, forced out by local pirates.” James stopped and looked at Alex, “Pirates?” he asked, agitated, “Don’t worry, they’ve moved on too.” Alex assured him, “How comforting.”

The loading process was, well, long and hard; and “Pinhead” wasn’t offering any help. “Looks heavy, that.” he said, eyes glittering maliciously as James heaved a final cargo crate into the hold, “No shit. Now do your job and get us to Chiron.” he panted, “With pleasure.” the man said sarcastically.

James headed to the guest quarters--though they were more akin a closet in reality, but they thankfully had access to a long range comm system. James pulled up the listing, Union Sector, Chiron, Alioth Industries, Michael Draven. He waited for several long minutes, growing increasingly agitated as he looked around at the grimy surroundings, Doesn’t he ever clean his ship?

Finally an image appeared, distorted it reorganized itself to suit a two-dimensional display. Michael looked at him and his mouth fell open, “What the fuck do you want, James?!” he asked, “Now is that any way to greet your favorite brother?” James said smiling, “You tried to kill me!” Michael blustered, “Water under the bridge!” James chortled. “Anyways, I called because I need a favor.” he continued, cutting Michael off. “A favor?! Why would I do anything for you?!” Michael spat. “Cause if you don’t help me out then I’ll give my sister a call and tell her you’re being an ass.” James said, “Why should she care?” Michael asked, sounding more as though he had a headache than as though he were filled with fury at this point. “Just cause you don’t like us talking doesn’t mean that we don’t talk.” James said as though he were explaining a simple concept to a child.

Michael sat there for a minute, thinking, “Fine, now what the fuck do you want?” he asked, “I want a meeting with your boss, and you know what, throw in a representative from the Union.” James said. Michael blinked, “Would you like a house with that, a ship, maybe?” he asked sarcastically, “First off, I don’t have a boss, I put just as much money in as everyone else. Second, we’re not an embassy, we don’t just get to call Union reps up and ask them over for tea.” he said, James rolled his eyes, “The money is down under Mr. Carbine’s name.” he said, “So he’s your boss. And as for Mr. Diplomat, well, you’re resourceful, you’ll come up with somethin’.” James cut the transmission. Michael may be a stuck up son of a bitch but he’d get James his meeting.

There was a beep at Rhoden’s door and he looked up, “Enter.” he called. The door opened and Michael entered, “Yes, Michael?” he asked. “Rhoden, my… uh… my brother-in-law wants a meeting.” the man said, “Oh, does he want to come work with Alioth Industries?” Rhoden asked, raising his eyebrows. “I don’t know what he wants but he said he wanted to, well, he wanted a Union representative there too.” Michael said.

Rhoden blinked a few times, “And this is the same brother-in-law that tried to kill you, right?” he asked, dropping his pad on the table and leaning back in his chair. “Well, he was angry, you see… he doesn’t like me very much and he’s a bit overprotective of his sister…” Rhoden’s face remained impassive, “I see.” he said, Michael swallowed. “So… d’you think we can arrange a meeting?” he asked, doubtfully. “Of course, I’ll see if I can reach someone to represent the Union right away.” Rhoden said, standing up and smiling. Michael took a step back, startled. “Er… thanks…” he said, “Not a problem, least we can do for family--well, your family. Besides,” Rhoden said, his smile broadening, “I’m in a good mood today.”

Michael smiled, muttered his thanks again and fled the room at top speed. “You. Are. Evil!” Haly said, leaning up from behind a couch, Rhoden laughed, “I meant what I said.” he replied, “Oh, I know, but that didn’t stop you from scaring the blood out of Mike’s head.” she said as he sat down beside her, “Well, I’ve got to have some fun.” he said, she rolled her eyes, “What, spending time with me isn’t good enough?” she asked, “Now who’s evil?” Rhoden asked, laughing again. He’d contact the Union tomorrow.

Rhoden woke up the next morning and got dressed. He wore his usual clothing, a crisp black shirt with a white front and the Alioth Industries logo on his left breast. Black pants, and black boots which could pass for formal shoes at a glance. He put his hair in order and stood in front of the mirror for a moment, meeting his own hard gaze. He gave a smile and went down one level, entering his office.

The office was large and had a desk on a raised portion of the room, behind which the wall was entirely comprised of glass. There was some furniture, bookcases, a coffee table, and a large screen above a fireplace in the middle of the room. The other end housed another raised platform with another glass wall, this platform held an oval table.

Rhoden sat behind his desk and called up his current Union contact--Alioth Industries had been doing business with the Union through a third party, Millenium Armoury, who typically provided vehicles and infantry weapons to the military. Eventually, of course, Alioth Industries would meet or surpass Millenium Armoury in terms of recognition within the Union but that was far off and unimportant to today’s topic of discussion--whatever that may be.

A holographic image resolved in front of Rhoden, “What is it, Mr. Carbine?” the contact, a young woman by the name of Sierra Clemming asked politely, “Ms. Clemming, an associate of mine has requested a meeting between myself, his brother, and a Union representative.” Rhoden said, “The circumstances are--at best--enigmatic and in any case I lack the weight to call on someone in a more official capacity.” he continued, “So I’m afraid I must ask you to come down to our office today.” he finished. “Alright, call me intrigued. I’ll be there in an hour.” she said, raising her eyebrows. “There’s no rush, Mr. Polson will be coming in from offworld--we don’t expect him until midday and from what I’ve heard he’s less than punctual on a good day.” Rhoden replied, she smiled, “I’ll come anyways, I’ve been wanting to see your… operation. Goodbye, Mr. Carbine, I’ll see you soon.” the image dissolved. Rhoden pressed a button on his desk, “We’re expecting guests, make yourselves presentable.” Rhoden said, his voice going to everyone’s personal comms.

James spent the rest of the trip to Chiron poking and prodding the ore, figuring out how it worked. He wanted to know how to scan for it and contrary to popular belief among his peers he actually did know a thing or two outside of shooting a gun. He’d found a way to detect the stuff by the time they set down.

“Thanks, Pinhead.” James called. He’d made a last minute decision to… relocate… their landing site to just behind the Alioth Industries building, the back of the building was entirely comprised of new cement, apparently they were expanding. For now, though, there was a massive pile of ore that James, Alex, Sarah, and Yvonne stood in front of. “You three stay here, I’m goin’ in. Don’t let anyone near the rocks.” he said.

He walked around the building and entered through the front, “Hello, Mr. Polson.” a young woman said from behind a desk in the obscenely clean building. “Mr. Carbine is expecting you.” another young woman stood up and escorted James to a nice looking door. He entered the room and whistled, “Nice place you got here, boss.” he said. He saw a man, dressed simply but in clothes that looked both functional and elegant, and a woman who wore a nice suit which certainly looked elegant but in no way functional. Carbine sat behind a large desk which was obviously his, the woman stood behind the desk and to the side, apparently she didn’t want to sit.

“You have a good place here, Mr. Carbine, it was nice getting to see it.” Ms. Clemming said, “Thank you, we’ve been expanding lately and I hope we’ll continue to do so.” Rhoden said as they entered his office, “Would you like me to fetch you a chair?” he asked, gesturing to his desk. “Oh no, I’ll just stand.” she said. Rhoden seated himself behind his desk just as the comm beeped, “Mr. Polson is on his way up, sir.”

The door opened a minute later and the man walked in. Rhoden saw Ms. Climming’s lips purse out of the corner of his eye, but he simply maintained a neutral face. The man was wearing a brown trench cloak, and an equally brown wide-brimmed hat. He wore simple clothing of similar coloring beneath that and boots. Two pistols were quite prominently visible on his hips. “Nice place you got here, boss.” Polson said.

“I certainly think so.” Rhoden said as the man came and seated himself at the desk uninvited. “Let’s get straight to the point. First off I’m afraid Michael couldn’t make our little meeting, so what do you want?” he asked.

James smiled at the man’s straightforwardness, and even more so at the womans distaste. “Well I have a lot of rocks out back you might be interested in.” he said, holding up a hand to stall any questions. “The stuffs harder than anything the Union uses right now, seems to take energy into it like it ain’t no business too.” he said.

James reached into the pocket of his coat and pulled out a small rock, “Now I’m no scientist but if you scan that I believe you’ll find you can combine it with that kalgenite you use in your ships right now. Make a lovely new material.” he said, smiling. It all hinged on this, he knew the ore was compatible with kalgenite, but if the Union wasn’t interested enough to bite he’d be shit outta luck. He could take it and sell it to someone else, he supposed, take a few more steps and a lot more trouble, but it would still work.

Rhoden took out a scanner and waved it over the small sample, “It is compatible with kalgenite. It’s harder than kalgenite, bit heavier but still lighter than titanium…” he muttered, “Interesting, it does look like it would absorb energy better in a processed form.” he said. He scanned the man’s face.

“Now, you’ve shown us your cards,” he said, tapping the table with his finger, “What do you want from us in exchange.” he said, cocking an eyebrow, “Or am I to believe you’re doing this out of the kindness of your heart?” he asked. Ms. Clemmings maintained a stern face but met his eyes, they both knew that they’d pay the price for something like this, and Polson knew it too.

Rhoden pondered the emotion he felt at that. Certainly there was some disdain for this questionably-clean man sitting in his office conducting what the lower life-forms of the galaxy might call business. But there was something else… yes, it was intrigue, fondness. Sure, he was being used, but the Union was using him too--to make weapons. And he was using the Union to make more money and expand his business. Everyone used someone.

“Nothing much. A ship.” James said, “Heavily armed, armored… oh, and built with this new alloy I’ve so kindle brought you.” he said, leaning back in his chair. “And, of course, the freedom to fly it through Union space--don’t worry I won’t shoot up your ships or anything.” he assured them.

James knew he had them, but he was interested to see if they’d try to play games with him. It would be fun to see them try--though he was a bit worried about Carbine if they did decide to go down that route, the man seemed to know what he was doing. “Doesn’t sound like too high a price to me, and I’m sure a nice company like Alioth Industries has the means to make a nice little ship.”

There was enough ore down there for two ships, at least, “Now, you only get the info on how to find the stuff after I have my ship, just so’s you know. And I’ll be watching you to make sure you’re not up to anything.” he added, just to be sure.

Ms. Clemming’s eyes widened but Rhoden gave no visual response to the request, listening as the man told them that they wouldn’t be finding out how to get the ore until after the ship was built. Neither James nor Ms. Clemming seemed to understand that Rhoden already had all he needed to find the material, and he wasn’t about to enlighten them either. Polson had earned the ship as far as he was concerned.

“Alright, we’ve got a design in the works. We’ll move the ore, process it, and have your ship built within a week.” Rhoden said. That seemed to satisfy the man because he allowed them to go down and begin moving the ore.

Thankfully they had had new equipment installed quite recently and could actually process the ores into an alloy and manufacture the ship. “The new ores Dyridium. The alloy is... “ Rhoden thought for a moment, “Let’s go with Kaldyrium.” he said. Ms Clemmings said nothing. “I suggest you go clear this with the Union.” he said, she stood still for a moment but walked away. A very interesting young woman.

James stuck around and kept an eye on the process of building the ship. It was one hundred meters long, by Carbine’s account, it contained state-of-the-art systems all around, including an AI core and some cleaning drones, the man had also muttered something about standard models holding Viper Drones but he didn’t know what those were anyways.

The ship had plenty of room on the inside, a docking area which opened onto a decent sized cargo hold and all the other necessities--engineering, weapons, power systems. And then it had a bunch of extra rooms which were easily modified for any use, quarters, extra storage, prison cells. He didn’t know what he’d use them all for, certainly some storage, hidden compartments, the like but there was more than enough room to suit his needs. He’d covert a few to extra quarters, maybe take on some passengers--or more crew. He’d been tryin’ to find a doctor or something for a while now.

The ship slowly took shape from the schematics, the hull was the first done, and soon the innards of the ship took place--a meshwork of wires, pipes and interior plating. A day after James’s ship was started another one began construction. It proceeded more quickly and more than once he saw Carbine scuttling around it, spending hours inside. It was finished before his was even close and given a paint job.

Then Carbine worked his way into James’s ship--he’d decided to call it Elysium. Work slowed down as the man pulled out wires and redid entire systems, soon the neat and orderly systems were everywhere and jumbled together unimaginably. He pulled Yvonne to the side when she returned from lunch that day, “What’s that madman doin’?” he asked. She gave a smile, “Work’s going quicker with him and he actually knows how to get these systems optimized.” she said, “Then why didn’t he design the ship right?” James asked sourly. She laughed at him, “‘Cause most people’d never be able to get in there and fix shit if something went wrong, but luckily for you I’m very good at my job.” she replied, walking up the ramp.

It took two more days to finish and then it got a paint job of its own. James took a quick tour of the ship, first the cargo hold--nothing particularly special, but more than he’d had to work with in the past. A lot of empty rooms waiting to be fitted out, all the critical systems, and finally the cockpit. It was another day entirely for Carbine and his people to explain all the systems to them--they’d never worked with anything so advanced, or in this good a condition.

They were ready to go, “All systems optimal, Captain.” Sarah said from her position further back in the bridge--it was more of a cockpit, but there was space behind the pilot and co-pilots seats for plenty more people--all systems on the ship could be fully operated remotely from the bridge, a nice feature they’d never had the luxury of working with before. “Where to?” Alex asked, sitting in the pilot’s seat. “Let’s head to the main spaceport, see if we can’t pick up some honest work before we get off this rock.” James said, smiling.
